Public Input Sought For Halibut and Bottomfish Seasons

ODFW is hosting a virtual meeting on Monday, Aug. 9 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. to gather public input on the 2022 sport halibut and bottomfish seasons.

Pacific halibut:

The International Pacific Halibut Commission approved a 1.5 million-pound catch limit for Area 2A (Oregon, Washington, and California) through 2022. This is the final year fishery managers are reasonably certain of the quota going into this public meeting which should help guide discussions for the 2022 season.

Bottomfish:

Federal allocations for Oregon for 2022 are already known. Staff is looking for input on bag limits and any other measures needed to stay within the Oregon recreational share of those allocations next year. "It's important we hear from a wide range of anglers before making decisions on the upcoming seasons," said Lynn Mattes, ODFW Recreational Halibut and Bottomfish Project Leader.

While staff typically host in-person meetings in several coastal locations, the Aug. 9 meeting will be held online and by teleconference to be precautionary due to ongoing COVID-19 public health concerns. Information that will be presented at the meeting will be available on the ODFW Sport Bottomfish and Halibut webpages by Friday, Aug 3.
