This special event, held during Banned Books Week (October 5–11, 2025), will unveil a striking stair mural created by local artist and muralist Gary Herd, featuring banned and challenged book covers.

About the event
This special event, held during Banned Books Week (October 5–11, 2025), will unveil a striking stair mural created by local artist and muralist Gary Herd, featuring banned and challenged book covers. The program will also share plans for a second, garden-themed mural at the Seed & Read Garden stairs.
The event is free, family-friendly, and open to the community. It will also include a raffle for the complete set of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2024.
The project was generously funded by the Newport Public Library Foundation, which covered the artist and supplies.
