3 Lost As The Mary B Capsized In Yaquina Bay

Last night around 9:30 pm waves across the Yaquina Bay Bar were up to 20-feet and the Coast Guard had to put restrictions on the bar, however there were three vessels outside the bar attempting to cross to come into port. The Coast Guard deployed to assist. Two of the vessels made it across however the Mary B II, was struck by a wave and caused it to capsize. The Coast Guard responded with the Helicopter from Newport to search for survivors around 10:30pm.


They deployed a rescue swimmer and recovered one of the fishermen, identified as 48-year old James Lacey of South Toms River New Jersey. He was transported to EMS on shore and then taken to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital were he was later pronounced deceased.


At 12:28 AM, Newport Fire Department found 50-year Joshua Porter from Toledo on the beach, near Nye Beach, where he was pronounced deceased. The Mary B II ultimately ran aground, on the beach, near the north side of the Yaquina Bay North Jetty. The boat Skipper, 50-year old Stephen Biernacki from Barnegat Township, NJ was found with the boat and pronounced deceased at the scene.
