The city of Newport swore in a new Mayor and four new city councilors Monday night. Dean Sawyer was sworn in as the cities new Mayor. David Allen was re-elected to his council position and CM Hall and Ryan Parker were elected and sworn in. In taking over as Mayor, Sawyer thanked Sandy Roumagoux for her leadership over the past 6-years. He said she helped to keep things steady with the city and presented her with a plaque. He also thanked Wendy Engler and Mark Saelans for their work on the council as well and presented them with plaques.

Once sworn in the first item of business was to appoint two positions that were open on the council that needed to be filled. The council had 11 applications for city council to consider. Members of the audience encouraged the council to vote for a diverse council, and some encouraged the council to vote for previous council members who had applied to keep with continuity and knowledge. The council chose Beatriz Botello Salgado and Cynthia Jocobi to fill the two remaining terms on the council to 2021. The council elected David Alan as the council president.
