Newport Continues VRD Discussion

The Newport City Council held its first public hearing regarding changes to Newport’s regulations for short-term rentals. Changes contained in the draft ordinance phase out vacation rentals as a permitted use in certain parts of the city, and limit them in other areas, which may impact the value of the affected properties.

Many testified that they did not want to see changes to the rules but rather that those who don't follow the rules have better regulations. A component of the Commission’s recommendation is a new zoning overlay identifying areas in the City where vacation rentals will continue to be allowed. There are two maps of the proposed zoning overlay on the cities website. One shows the full extent of the permitted area and another shows how new spacing standards would be applied in the permitted area.

A staff recommendation is also available on the website. Newport city staff recommended continuing the hearing to hear from more people and to do further research on the issue. The council approved further discussion at their upcoming work session for March 4th and continued the public hearing to March 18th.
