On Sunday August 9^th, 2026, just after midnight, Newport Police arrested 19-year old Shataha Beggs of Siletz, after she attempted to elude police. The event started when a Newport Officer observed a Toyota Camry with no license plates traveling through Newport at a high rate of speed.

The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the car and as they did, the driver failed to yield and continued driving. The driver of the Toyota turned eastbound on Hwy 20, running through a red light at the intersection at a high rate of speed. Newport officers and Deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office pursued the Toyota eastbound on Hwy 20 towards Toledo as the driver reached speeds around 90 MPH and was passing slower moving vehicles.

An Officer from the Toledo Police Department responded to assist and effectively deployed spike strips near the Hwy 20/ Business Hwy 20 West Junction, disabling the front passenger tire of the Toyota. The driver continued into the City of Toledo even as one of their tires was deflated. The car ultimately became disabled and came to a stop on SE Butler Bridge near SE East Slope and Beggs and two other occupants of the car were detained.

Officers observed evidence that Beggs was impaired. They also located a usable quantity of cocaine and a loaded handgun concealed underneath the driver’s seat. Beggs was arrested at the scene and lodged in Lincoln County facing multiple charges including reckless driving, reckless engandering another person, attempting to elude a police officer, DUII, and unlawful posession of a firearm and cocaine. The incident remains under investigation.
