Family Rescued After Becoming Stranded In Siletz Bay

North Lincoln Fire & Rescue responded to a water rescue in Siletz Bay on Saturday afternoon August 1st after a family became stranded on a sandbar as the incoming tide and increasing winds cut off their escape.

At approximately 3:32 p.m., North Lincoln Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a reported water rescue in Siletz Bay after a caller observed a group of people with paddleboards on a sandbar approximately one-half mile south of the SW 51st Street beach access. Upon arrival, crews determined the individuals were not in distress and appeared to have the ability to safely return to shore.

Approximately one hour later, at 4:17 p.m., North Lincoln Fire & Rescue received another 911 call reporting that the same group was now surrounded by water. The incoming tide had filled in around the sandbar, and significantly stronger winds had left the family unable to paddle back to shore. The family was clinging to a large log lodged on the sandbar while awaiting assistance.

With an incoming tide and sustained winds of approximately 25 knots, North Lincoln Fire & Rescue's Water Rescue Team deployed a rescue personal watercraft staffed by two trained rescuers. The team safely reached the stranded family and successfully rescued two juveniles and their father. All three were evaluated by EMS personnel at the scene and declined transport to the hospital.

This incident illustrates how quickly conditions can change in Siletz Bay. An area that is accessible one moment can become isolated by the incoming tide in a matter of minutes. While the bay may appear calm and inviting, rising tides, strong tidal currents, and increasing winds can quickly create dangerous conditions for both motorized and non-motorized watercraft.
