The Newport Fisherman's Wives will host their annual Homeport Dinner, an event that has become a cornerstone of community support and recognition for local maritime professionals. This year's dinner carries special significance, with proceeds from the silent auction will be dedicated to supporting the family of John Stevenson, a beloved local fisherman tragically lost at sea. All silent auction proceeds will directly benefit the Stevenson family.

Six distinguished honorees will be recognized, including Tom McAdams, Connie Kennedy, Kaety Jacobson, Laura Anderson, Gary Ripka, and Jim Sievers. These individuals represent the diverse contributions to Oregon's fishing industry, from advocacy and sustainable fishing practices to community leadership.

Tom McAdams: A legendary Coast Guard advocate, McAdams has been a pivotal figure in supporting local maritime safety and community protection. His long-standing commitment to maritime services has made him a respected icon in Newport.

Connie Kennedy: A former Newport Fisherman's Wives president, Kennedy has been a passionate advocate for fishermen's safety, seafood education, and industry support. She played a crucial role in establishing the organization's reputation and expanding its community impact.

Kaety Jacobson: With a distinguished career spanning Sea Grant and county commissioner, Jacobson has been instrumental in bridging governmental support with fishing community needs. Her grant writing and continued advocacy have provided critical resources for local maritime professionals.

Laura Anderson: Representing Local Ocean Seafoods, Anderson has been a key community partner. Her sustainable fishing advocacy and educational efforts, including a notable Maritime Museum exhibit detailing local fisheries, have raised awareness about ocean conservation.

Gary Ripka: Chosen by community vote, Ripka has been a tireless negotiator for fishermen's interests, particularly in challenging areas like crab price negotiations. His behind-the-scenes work ensures fair compensation for local fishing fleets.

Jim Sievers: A dedicated fleet owner and industry advocate, Sievers has consistently represented local fishermen in complex regulatory meetings. His work has been crucial in maintaining a balance between necessary fishing regulations and sustainable livelihoods.

Taunette Dixon, a key organizer of the event said this is something that board president Becca Bostwick-Terry got started after Covid as a way to raise important funds for the organization and also to recognize those who are important in the industry. "These are our heroes," Dixon said. "We want to make sure they know how much they are appreciated."

The Homeport Dinner will include a dinner catered by Myril and there will be an appitizer competition plus dessert dash and live music. . Tickets are available online, and the organization continues to accept silent auction items to maximize support for the Stevenson family.
