On June 18th, the Lincoln City Police Department conducted a Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Event at the flashing light controlled crosswalk on Highway 101, a short walk from Taft Elementary and Taft High School. During the event Lincoln City Police utilized a pedestrian decoy who crossed Highway 101 approximately every 5 minutes for several hours at the marked crosswalk. According to Lincoln City police the flashing light crosswalk works very well as there were only three violations of the Failure To Yield To Pedestrian Law.
One thing that was discovered during the pedestrian safety operation was that numerous drivers were observed either texting, calling, or using their mobile devices in other ways in the area, including one driver recorded the event with her phone, while driving. In total 13 citations were issued. The Lincoln City Police Department thanked ODOT and Oregon Impact for the grant-funding used to support this event. The next pedestrian safety operation in Lincoln City is scheduled for August.
