The week of May 12-17 is observed as National Police Week, and calls attention to the dedicated men and women who serve and protect our communities right here in Lincoln County. From the rugged coastline to the inland towns, these officers embody courage, dedication, and a commitment to the safety and well-being of all residents. National Police Week, established in 1962, provides an important opportunity to honor the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers across the country, and especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Here in Lincoln County, our local police departments, Oregon State Police and the Sheriff's Office work tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to ensure our safety.
The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, under the leadership of Sheriff Adam Shanks, oversees a vast area, providing patrol, marine, and forest divisions, as well as animal services and a dedicated K-9 unit. Their work extends from responding to emergencies to community outreach programs, including the local search and rescue program. The Sheriff's office also provides dedicated deputies to the cities of Siletz, Depoe Bay, Waldport and Yachats. Within the county, several incorporated cities have their own police departments, each playing a vital role in their specific communities.
The Newport Police Department, led by Chief Jason Malloy, focuses on maintaining Newport's reputation as a safe place to live, work, and visit. Their officers are involved in patrol, investigations, and community service initiatives. The Newport Oregon Police Department currently has two K-9s: Sly and Zoe.
In Lincoln City, the Police Department, is led by Chief Dave Broderick, guided by its core values of loyalty, compassion, pride, dedication, courage, accountability, respect, excellence, and service, prioritizes the safety and protection of residents and visitors. Their Patrol Division actively addresses criminal activity and works to improve traffic safety within the community. They have two K-9's Nato and Nix.
The Toledo Police Department, led by Chief Michael Pace serves the 3,500 residents of Toledo. the heart of Lincoln County. The Toledo Police Department is a vital law enforcement agency serving the City of Toledo, nestled along the scenic Yaquina River in central Lincoln County. Though a smaller, rural department, they are dedicated to providing 24-hour service and ensuring the safety and well-being of their community.
Beyond the city police departments and the Sheriff's Office, the Oregon State Police (OSP) plays a crucial role in ensuring public safety throughout the county. The Oregon State Police is a multifaceted agency. Their presence in Lincoln County is vital for maintaining safety on state highways, investigating crimes that cross jurisdictional boundaries, and providing specialized services. OSP troopers are responsible for patrolling state routes like Highways 101, 20, 34, and 18, responding to traffic incidents, and enforcing traffic laws to keep our roadways safe for residents and the many visitors who travel through Lincoln County. They often work in collaboration with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and local police departments, providing support and resources when needed.
Beyond National Police Week, it's important to remember the daily sacrifices made by these officers and their families. They respond to calls at any hour, face dangerous situations, and work to build trust within the communities they serve. Here in Lincoln County, there are several ways the community can show their support. Attending local events, expressing gratitude directly to officers, and supporting initiatives that promote positive relationships between law enforcement and the public are all meaningful ways to acknowledge their commitment.
