New Year DUII Arrests And Crashes Keep OSP Busy

On December 28th 2023 State Police Trooper Kolacz responded to a singe car crash on SR 180 East of Eddyville. The investigation showed the driver of a Ford truck, identified as 45-year old Shiloh M. McConnell crashed into a hill side near milepost 7 on SR-180 and overturned. When contacted by Trooper Kolacz he displayed indicators of impairment. After conducting a DUII investigation McConnell was arrested for DUII for controlled substances, reckless driving, reckless endangering and a warrant for Parole Violation. He was transported to Samaritan Pacific Communities hospital in Newport for jail clearance. A search warrant was approved, and a blood sample was seized for testing. After release from the hospital McConnell was lodged at the Lincoln County Jail.


On Friday, December 29, 2023, at around 10:37 am, State Police Trooper Kolacz responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 20 near milepost 26. The collision occurred when a westbound Chrysler 200, driven by 24-year old Austin H. Covely of Newport drove into the opposing lane crashing into an eastbound Toyota Highlander. Three people were involved in this collision, and all were transported by ground ambulance to Samaritan Pacific Communities hospital in Newport. Mr. Covely was issued a violation citation. Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, ODOT Incident Response, Toledo Fire, and Pacific West Ambulance assisted.


Another injury crash occured on 12/30/23 around 1:36 pm State Police Trooper Kolacz responded to a single vehicle crash that occurred on Highway 101 on Otter Crest when the driver of a northbound GMC Sierra pickup lost control while passing. The GMC went off the road along the northbound side and crashed into a tree. The driver was alone and was extricated by firefighters and then transported by ground ambulance to Samaritan Pacific Communities hospital in Newport. The driver was issued a citation regarding the crash.


On January 1, 2024 State Police trooper Nathman stopped the driver of a BMW for an observed traffic violation on Highway 101 at the north end of Lincoln city. The driver, identified as 52-year old Thomas W. Hayes exhibited multiple signs of impairment and was asked to perform field sobriety tests. He consented and performed poorly before refusing to continue with tests. Hays was arrested and transported to the Lincoln City Police Department where he provided a breath sample of .20, blood alcohol content, over twice the legal limit. He was cited and released at his residence.
