Newport Fire Chief Rob Murphy gave an update to the Newport council on the Covid 19 virus. Oregon is currently at 47 cases and one death and there are 182 cases pending, however there are still no reported cases in Lincoln County. Washington state has been the hardest hit and has over 900 cases and 48 deaths. In light of the Governors proclamation about social distancing Rob said he has closed the fire station to the public and visitors. He is also no longer issuing burn permits for right now.
Right now the 60+ center, the Library, the Recreation Center and the pool are also closed. Peggy Hawker, city recorder said the cities municipal court will be cancelled until April 29th. Those who had court dates will be rescheduled. The city is also implementing a policy for employee leave due to closures from the Covid 19 virus. The Newport Performing Arts Center and the Visual Arts Center are both closed. City staff is also reviewing potential closures of other city buildings.
During the city council meeting the city declared an emergency, which includes no shut offs of city utilities such as sewer and water. Chief Murphy emphasized staying home if you are sick and be vigilant about washing your hand and keeping a clean environment. Mayor Sawyer encouraged citizens to help out local restaurants by placing orders to go or delivery.
