Newport Encourages Participation In Oregon Shake Out

The City of Newport is encouraging residents, businesses, schools, community organizations and visitors to participate in the Great Oregon ShakeOut Earthquake Drill on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 10:15 a.m.
The annual ShakeOut drill provides an opportunity to practice what to do during an earthquake and take additional steps toward emergency preparedness, including developing an emergency plan, assembling emergency supplies and learning evacuation routes. Participants are encouraged to practice the recommended Drop, Cover and Hold On protective actions.
More than 45 million people around the world are expected to participate in this year's Great ShakeOut. Participants in the Newport Marina and Bayfront areas may hear the NOAA siren at approximately 10:15 a.m. on October 15 as part of the drill. For those participating in Newport, the ShakeOut drill can also be an opportunity to practice what they would do following an earthquake that could generate a tsunami.
Those located within the tsunami inundation zone may choose to practice their evacuation route by walking to high ground or a designated safe area. Evacuation routes can be viewed and downloaded at NewportOregon.gov/evacuation_maps.php
During an earthquake, the safest response is generally to:
DROP to your hands and knees
This position helps prevent you from being knocked down by the shaking and reduces the chance of being struck by falling or flying objects.
COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand.
If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it for protection.
If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall.
Stay on your knees and bend over to protect vital organs.
HOLD ON until the shaking stops.
If you are under a sturdy table or desk, hold on to it with one hand and be prepared to move with it if it shifts.
If no shelter is available, protect your head and neck with both arms and hands.
