ODE Investigation Of School District

The Oregon Department of Education is investigating a case of alleged inappropriate touching involving students at Oceanlake Elementary School last spring following concerns expressed by a Lincoln City area mother. Superintendent Dr. Karen Grey stated that the Lincoln County School District is aware of the appeal through the Oregon Department of Education. She said the district has been working closely with the families involved and fully support the process that ODE will follow.

On March 12th the ODE sent a letter to the school district stated they were opening an appeal regarding complaints of sexual discrimination and harassment. The letter states that the complaint is that the school district allegedly did not conduct timely, fair and impartial discrimination, harassment, bullying and intimidation investigations. It also alleges the district and administrators did not remedy a hostile environment when complaints were made alleging discrimination.

Dr. Grey added that she and the LCSD administration have communicated and met at length with the parent who filed the complaint in order to resolve issues. This included a meeting with the Children’s Advocacy Center and local law enforcement about the topic. On April 9 at an all admin meeting the Children’s Advocacy Center will be providing further training to district staff. Dr. Grey added that the District, is under strict confidentiality laws and cannot comment about details publicly when they involve students and families.
