Pedestrian Hospitalized After Being Struck On Hwy 101

Friday December 14th the Newport Police Department responded to the 1500 Block of N Coast Hwy on the report of a vehicle vs. pedestrian traffic crash. Upon arrival, Officers from the Newport Police Department discovered a white Mercedes SUV had been traveling southbound on N. Coast Hwy and struck a pedestrian crossing the Hwy while in a designated crosswalk. The pedestrian was transported by ambulance to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport, where he was listed in stable, but serious condition.


The southbound lane of travel was reduced to a single lane for nearly forty-five minutes while the investigation into the crash was conducted. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, whose name was not released by Newport Police, remained on scene and cooperated with law enforcement.


Impairment was not a factor into the cause of this crash, which is still under investigation. The driver of the vehicle was cited for Failure to stop and remain stopped for a pedestrian. Newport Police Department was assisted by Newport Fire Department, PacWest Ambulance, and ODOT.
