Interim Port of Newport Manager Teri Dressler and Aaron Bretz director of operations were contacted about a month ago by Shawn Teevin owner of Teevin Bros regarding establishing a possible log barging operation at the Port of Newport. Mr. Teevin reported that this would be a small operation with about one log barge needed per month and around 10 trucks per day per month delivering logs directly to a lay down space at the terminal. There would not be a need for a debarking area and it would require a small lay down space to work from. It was discussed with staff to see if this was the type of operation that the Port could accommodate.
Dressler said they presented the idea to the commercial fishers users group.Ā She said the meeting with the group was positive. Heather Mann with the mid water trawlers group and chair of the committee said they are willing to work with Teevin on the project. She pointed out that the mid water trawlers need time at the dock during their busy season from November to January and again April through May. Dressler said that she provided Teevin with information on costs for setting up the operation. The port commission thanked the staff for their work on the project and will further discuss this at a meeting later this month.
