Rope Rescue In Depoe Bay

Just before 3 pm on July 30th,.m. Depoe Bay Fire was requested to a medical emergency near Boiler Bay State Park. On arrival, Depoe Bay Engine 21 traversed the unimproved and very steep trail down to the patient who had suffered an obvious broken ankle. Firefighter/Paramedics from Depoe Bay Fire stabilized the victim and began Advanced Life Support treatment. Simultaneously during patient stabilization, crews called for the US Coast Guard helicopter for a hoist extraction. After several delays the USCG denied the flight based on weather conditions.

This declination by the USCG resulted in the execution of the contingent plan to activate the Lincoln County Rope Team. With Depoe Bay Fire on scene assuming patient care and packaging (supported by personnel from Pacific West Ambulance, Lincoln County Sheriff, Oregon State Police, Oregon Department of Transportation), the Lincoln County Rope Team assembled to effect the cliff side rescue. Personnel from North Lincoln Fire, Toledo Fire, and Newport Fire setup an over the side hauling system minutes after arriving and pulled the victim 75’ up the near vertical trail. The patient was transported to PCH hospital in stable condition.
