Siletz Issues Water Restrictions Due To Drought

ree

The Siletz River is at a 130 year low, because of this and the Governors decoration of a Lincoln County drought emergency, the city has entered into its earliest ever water curtailment. Mayor Warman emphasized the unprecedented situation, noting the river is unusually low for July - typically resembling September conditions.

Key restrictions include:

  • 10,000 gallon monthly water usage cap

  • Hand-watering of fruits, vegetables, and flowers allowed

  • No lawn watering, driveway/sidewalk cleaning, or pool filling

  • Potential fines for excessive water use

The city will monitor water consumption using Bluetooth-enabled meter reading systems, with random checks in high-use areas. Local industries like Georgia Pacific have already ceased river water extraction weeks ago. The cities of Toledo and Newport also draw water from the Siletz. The mayor warned that well owners may also face challenges, anticipating potential water table depletion.

"We're trying to be fair while ensuring we have enough drinking water and essential services," the mayor stated, urging community cooperation during this critical drought period. Residents are encouraged to conserve water and stay informed about ongoing restrictions. The average household uses about 5,000-6,000 gallons of water a month so it people should be able to stay within the 10,000 gallon cap. The county declared a drought declaration on July 2nd and the Governor formalized it with a declaration on July 11th.
