Preliminary investigations revealed that the skateboarder, identified as 35-year old Joseph Wesley Tallman from Depoe Bay, attempted to cross the highway from the eastbound shoulder and was struck by a northbound Mack commercial motor vehicle. The vehicle was operated by a 35-year-old man from Veneta, who, unfortunately, was unable to avoid the collision despite his best efforts. Tallman was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital but was declared deceased shortly after arrival.

The operator of the truck sustained no injuries in the accident. The scene remained active for an extensive period, as investigators worked diligently to piece together the circumstances surrounding the collision. The highway was impacted for approximately four hours during the on-scene investigation.

This unfortunate accident underscores the critical need for awareness and caution when sharing roadways, especially those frequented by pedestrians and cyclists. It is vital for both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant. Pedestrians, including skateboarders, should always be aware of their surroundings and utilize designated crossing points wherever possible. At night it is important to wear reflective clothing so you can be seen by motorists, particularly during low-light conditions.
