Winds, Rain, High Surf and Beach Hazard Warnings

ree

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning through 11pm Saturday October 25th. Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are possible. Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines, causing possible widespread power outages and making travel difficult, especially for high profile vehicles, over open areas and bridges. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.

There is also a beach hazard warning and high surf advisory with sneaker waves possible. Breakers up to 30 feet are expected along the north and Central Coast. Destructive waves may wash over beaches, jetties, and other structures unexpectedly. People can be swept off rocks and jetties and drown while observing high surf. Minor beach erosion may damage coastal properties and buildings. Higher than normal water run-up is expected on beaches and low- lying shoreline.

Caution should be used when in or near the water. Always keep an eye on the waves, and be especially watchful of children and pets. Those participating in razor clam digs should exercise caution. It is advised to stay well back from the water`s edge and be alert for exceptionally high waves. Keep away from large logs on the beach. Water running up on the beach can easily lift or roll logs which can injure or kill someone caught in their path. Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions.

The Coast Guard is urging mariners and coastal communities of the Pacific Northwest to take precautions and stay alert as a strong coastal storm is expected to impact Washington and Oregon beginning. According to the National Weather Service, seas of 20 to 22 feet, are forecasted to begin offshore through the weekend. These contditions can produce dangerous seas, currents, and bar conditions.

Mariners should understand their capabilities and the capabilities of their vessel before setting sail. Vessels at anchor or mooring balls must ensure their gear and vessel can hold anchor in strong winds or seas. Razor Clam diggers participating in the fishery on coastal beaches should exercise extreme caution. Safety of life at sea is paramount. By staying informed, being prepared, and exercising good judgment, you can significantly reduce the risk of an accident and ensure you return home safely.
