Depoe Bay Creek Fire A Reminder To Be Prepared

The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) West Oregon District on May 11th engaged in an initial attack on the Depoe Bay Creek Fire, located approximately 2 miles east of Depoe Bay. The Fire is estimated to be 2.18 acres. Resources on scene included Depoe Bay Fire District, an Adult in Custody (AIC) crew, two ODF Type 4 engines, an ODF Type 6 engine, a contracted Type 6 and Type 2 Dozer.

ODF partners with Oregon Department of Corrections and runs a camp east of Tillamook that assists with crews to fight fire, as well as other forestry tasks. Forward progress has been stopped. Forward progress has been stopped and there are no structures threatened. This is a poignant reminder of wildfire risks in our region. Take this time to prepare by creating defensible space around your home and having an evacuation plan. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Oregon Department of Forestry.

As we begin to turn the corner into summer, things might look green and moist currently but we are well below normal for precipitation and are looking at a very challenging summer ahead. The Oregon Department of Forestry is urging fire safety and prevention. May is Wildfire Prevention Awareness Month. Over 70% of wildfires every year in Oregon are human-caused, with escaped debris burns topping the list.

With record-low snowpack and an abnormally warm winter, forecasters are anticipating a hotter and drier summer than usual. As grass and vegetation begin to dry out, the risk of a fire creeping away from a debris burn pile increases. Make sure to weigh your options and have all the required fire prevention tools in place before lighting the burn pile or incinerator. Because Lincoln County's cities border forested areas and a fire could break out anywhere at any time, citizens need to have a 24-hour go kit and a plan in place in case they need to evacuate quickly. To receive emergency alerts, it is recommended to sign up for Lincoln Alerts through the Lincoln County Emergency Management office.
