House Destroyed By Fire

At 0:08 AM on Sunday, December 15, 2019, Newport Fire Department was

dispatched to a report of a house on fire on SW Abalone Street near the

intersection SW 72nd Street. Upon arrival fire units observed a two story

residence fully involved in fire. Complicating the situation was a live power

line down in the driveway.

Fire crews established a water supply and used ground hose “monitors”

and hose lines to stop the advance of the fire. The live electrical line

hampered crew’s ability to contain the fire. Fire crews remained on scene

for about 5 hours overhauling the structure. The adjacent structure to the

north suffered minor heat damage.

This was kept to a minimum by the quick response from fire crews. Residents from the unit are being helped by the Red Cross. One occupant was transported to SPCH by Pacific West

Ambulance for minor smoke inhalation. One cat was rescued by fire crews,

another is still missing. The structure is a total loss.

Newport Fire Department received mutual aid response from Depoe Bay Fire District, Toledo Fire Dept., Central Oregon Coast Fire District, & Yachats Fire District. Lincoln County Sherriff’s Office, Central Lincoln PUD, the Salvation Army and Pacific West Ambulance provided assistance. Newport Fire Department responded with 1 fire engine, 2 chief officers and

3 firefighters.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Newport Fire Department

reminds you to have a working smoke detector and test it regularly, and

keep combustibles at least 18 inches away from any heating appliances.
