Mutual Aid Helps Extinguish Newport Garage Fire

On Firday March 13th at 11:41 pm Newport fire Department called in mutual aid from Depoe Bay, Seal Rock, and Central Coast fire departments along with crews from Pac West Ambulance when they responded to a residential structure fire involving a garage and attic on NE 6th street in Newport. Upon arrival, firefighters observed dense smoke emanating from a fire in the garage that extended into the attic.

Fire crews confirmed that the building had been evacuated and promptly initiated fire suppression operations. This included ventilation operations on the roof to assist crews working on the inside of the fire. Substantial damage was sustained in the garage and attic; however, a prompt firefighting response prevented the fire from spreading further within the structure.  No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Mutual aid agreements enable fire departments to provide and receive assistance during large-scale incidents or when resources are stretched thin. In this case, the rapid response of multiple agencies allowed for a more efficient firefighting operation, facilitating immediate fire suppression, evacuation assurance, and the implementation of critical ventilation operations. Such teamwork not only enhances the effectiveness of firefighting efforts but also helps protect lives and property.

The Newport Fire Department's prompt action, aided by its mutual aid partners, prevented the situation from escalating further within the structure, underscoring the importance of cooperation among fire services. As a reminder, the incident also emphasizes that residents should ensure all bedrooms have working smoke detectors to enhance safety in their homes.

Smoke alarms are a crucial line of defense in protecting lives and property from fire hazards. Smoke alarms provide early warning in the event of a fire, giving occupants valuable time to escape and call for help. Early detection can be critical in preventing injuries or fatalities. Regularly checking and replacing batteries ensures that smoke alarms function correctly.
