Newport HS Swim Team And Cheer Take State Titles

Newport High School Boys Swimming clenched the 2019 State Title by a landslide on Saturday. Newport had athletes competing in 17 of 22 events during Preliminaries on Friday morning and 12 of 22 events during Finals Saturday. NHS Boys had the highest first place point total of 90 points, breaking the previous highest total of 83 points set in 2010. The Boys Team also had the largest winning margin of 44 points over the second place Marshfield team, shattering the previous margin of 28 points also in 2010.
With the “500 squad” making the Finals in the 500 Freestyle event, the Cubs became the first team in 4A history to place four entries in an individual event. Final Boys scores had NHS above all 5A schools. Newport Boys also won the Championship in 2018. Two new Newport High Boys swimming records were set at the OSAA 4A State meet.
Lauren Bobo-Shisler was the only girl to qualify for Finals on Saturday. Bobo-Shisler broke her 50 Yard Freestyle record set at Districts at Preliminaries on Friday and again in Finals. She also broke her 100 Yard Freestyle record in the Finals. Bobo-Shisler placed third in the 50 Yard Freestyle and second in the 100 Yard Freestyle. Placing in both of her events, she scored 9 points for the Cubs Girls resulting in an 11th Place finish.
Newport Cheer participated in the 2019 OSAA State Cheerleading Championships on

Saturday as well and won the 4A Division. Newport nailed their routine receiving zero deductions. In addition to winning the 4A Division, Newport had the highest scoring routine of the morning including 1A-5A teams. Newport Cheer has placed 2nd in State six times since 2000. Newport Cheer has additional State Championships from 2005 and 2006. The 2018 1A-5A All State Cheerleading Team was recognized and performed at the end of the competition. Congratulations to the students and coaches of both the state championship teams.
