On 08-18-21 at 12:38 p.m., Newport Police Officers responded to a reported armed person inside a vehicle that was threatening to harm himself. Officers were able to establish communication with the person and engaged in conversation. Traffic was diverted from the area and residents in the area were able to shelter in place. After nearly 3 ½ hours, the person surrendered to Police. The person was taken into protective custody without further incident, and transported to the hospital for evaluation. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police responded to assist. A local business near the area where the disturbance occurred thanked the local police officers for their thoughtfulness and professionalism in handling the situation.
